Israeli opposition leaders unite to challenge Netanyahu government

Opposition leaders in Israel have signed a formal agreement to unite in an effort to change the current government led by Benjamin Netanyahu ahead of the upcoming elections on October 27. The coalition includes Yair Lapid, Naftali Bennett, Gadi Eisenkot, Avigdor Liberman, and Yair Golan.

Despite existing ideological differences, the leaders signed a document committing to act as a single bloc. Under the agreement, the parties will refrain from criticizing each other's policies until the election. Their shared goal is to increase their individual voter bases to secure a majority in the 120-seat Knesset, with the intent to immediately begin forming a joint government that will “protect Israel as a Jewish and democratic state.”

To facilitate this transition, the parties have established three working groups focused on increasing voter turnout, defining the framework for a post-election government, and combating smear campaigns. Recent public opinion polls suggest a tight race, with the opposition potentially securing 54-56 seats against 50-52 for the Netanyahu-led bloc, indicating that neither side is currently positioned to form a majority government alone.
