Israeli political landscape: Netanyahu, Eisenkot, and Bennett diverge on key issues
As Israel approaches elections on October 27, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu faces significant competition from figures such as former Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot and former Prime Minister Naftali Bennett. While the candidates share certain strategic views, notable differences exist regarding the Palestinian territories and Gaza.
On the Palestinian issue, all three leaders oppose the establishment of an independent Palestinian state. However, their approaches to the West Bank differ. Netanyahu’s coalition includes far-right parties advocating for annexation, whereas Eisenkot opposes annexation to avoid a binational state and calls for adherence to Israeli law regarding settlements. Bennett also opposes territorial concessions but supports removing illegal outposts.
Regarding Gaza, there is consensus on the need to disarm Hamas and a rejection of a full Israeli withdrawal before achieving this goal. Disagreements persist over the timeline and methods for ending Hamas's rule. Additionally, Netanyahu is reportedly making unprecedented efforts to secure renewed support from Donald Trump, with reports suggesting he has sought specific endorsements to bolster his campaign.
