Israeli settler violence in West Bank reaches breaking point, UN officials warn

United Nations officials and human rights groups have warned that violence by Israeli settlers in the West Bank has brought the territory to a ‘breaking point.’ During a UN Security Council meeting, Ramiz Alakbarov, the UN special coordinator for the Middle East peace process, called for a coordinated international effort to address the situation, citing home demolitions, attacks on infrastructure, and mass displacement of Palestinians.

Human rights organization B’Tselem described the situation as an escalating ‘ethnic cleansing’ operation, noting that settlers have established illegal outposts in the yards of Palestinian homes, forcing families out. Reports indicate that many of these incidents occur in the presence of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), which critics say fails to protect Palestinian residents.

In the village of Qusra, residents have been forced to remain indoors for days due to settler threats. While the Israeli defense minister characterized radical settlers as ‘boys on the hills,’ U.S. Ambassador Mike Huckabee has referred to the settlers as ‘terrorists.’ The current Israeli government, led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, has been noted for its nationalist stance and its efforts to expand settlements, which now house over 500,000 people in the West Bank.
