Israeli settlers attack European diplomatic convoy in West Bank

Masked Israeli settlers attacked a diplomatic convoy in the West Bank village of Taybeh on Saturday. The delegation included representatives from France, Belgium, Poland, and the Catholic Church, who were visiting to support Palestinian olive harvesters.

During the assault, 78-year-old Bernard Baudoux, the mayor of Aulnoye-Aymeries, France, was knocked to the ground and beaten with iron bars. Witnesses reported that the attackers also insulted the diplomats and smashed a window of a Belgian consular vehicle. While the mayor did not require hospitalization, the incident has drawn sharp international condemnation.

Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot and French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot both condemned the violence, with Barrot calling for the immediate arrest of those responsible. The European Union issued a statement demanding full accountability and measures to prevent further violence against Palestinians and journalists.

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar condemned the acts but criticized the European consulates for failing to coordinate the visit with the Israeli military. Meanwhile, the office of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu characterized the reports as a “defamation campaign” against Israel. Israeli police have launched an investigation into the incident.
