IDF kills Gaza aid truck driver Ahmad Esleem at Kerem Shalom crossing
On 26 July 2024 Israeli soldiers opened fire on Ahmad Nasser Esleem, a 30‑year‑old driver for World Central Kitchen, as his convoy stopped at the Kerem Shalom crossing on the Philadelphi corridor. Esleem stepped out of his truck, raised his hands and was shot in the head, the second member of the charity’s network killed by Israeli forces in Gaza.
Witnesses said the driver complied with orders, wore an orange safety vest and held all required permits, while the Israeli military claimed a driver ran toward troops, prompting a “suspect apprehension” response. World Central Kitchen described the killing as a field execution and called for a full investigation. The Gaza Transport Companies Association, representing drivers through the crossing, announced an emergency meeting to consider suspending all operations. Kerem Shalom is the sole humanitarian entry point into Gaza under the October 2023 cease‑fire, making the incident a flashpoint for concerns about the safety of aid workers.
The family of Esleem, who had recently welcomed a second child, mourns the loss and demands stronger protection for humanitarian personnel. International organizations, including the United Nations World Food Programme, have warned that any suspension of aid deliveries would further strain already critical humanitarian assistance in the enclave.
