Israel strikes southern Lebanon after two soldiers killed, US urges restraint

Two Israeli reservists were killed and four others seriously injured when a booby‑trapped building exploded in Majdal Zoun in southern Lebanon. Israel responded with its largest air campaign since the June 3 cease‑fire, hitting the towns of Tibnin, Al‑Mansouri and Burj al‑Shamali. The strike on Tibnin killed one civilian and wounded twelve. Israel blamed Hezbollah for a “flagrant cease‑fire violation,” though the group has not claimed responsibility.

The United States intervened, pressuring Israel to limit further strikes and thereby preventing a broader escalation that could have derailed the U.S.‑mediated talks in Rome between Israel and Lebanon. The diplomatic effort continued into its third day, with both sides seeking to implement a framework agreement on border security and the removal of Hezbollah weapons. Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz mourned the fallen soldiers and said all options remain open, while the Lebanese health ministry confirmed the civilian casualties.
