Israelis express concern over weakening ties with young American Jews

An AP-NORC poll has revealed growing concerns among Israelis regarding a weakening connection with younger Jewish Americans. The data suggests that younger generations tend to view support for Israel as less central to their Jewish identity compared to older adults.

Itai Nixon of Israel’s Ministry of Diaspora Affairs emphasized the importance of this bond, stating, “We’re the state of the Jewish people, not just Israelis.” Similarly, Lesley Sachs, chair of the Israel Movement for Reform and Progressive Judaism, described the relationship with the diaspora as a “strategic asset,” expressing concern that Israel may be losing its status as a perceived sanctuary amidst rising global antisemitism.

In response to these shifting dynamics, organizations like Taglit-Birthright Israel, which has hosted one million young adults since 2000, are working to foster personal connections that transcend political controversy. CEO Gidi Mark noted the necessity of exposing young people to the country to maintain these ties.
