Israel's Netanyahu vows no civil war amid Haredi conscription debate
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told Channel 14 that the arrests of Haredi yeshiva students who evaded conscription have been halted. He said a new mandatory military service law, to be adopted by a post‑election government, will rely on voluntary enlistment rather than force. Netanyahu emphasized that the policy will be implemented without sparking internal conflict, stating, “I do not want a civil war.” He linked the move to upcoming elections and the formation of a broad coalition that would include the Haredi community and right‑wing figures. In the same remarks, Netanyahu referenced Israel’s strategic posture, mentioning weakened Iranian influence, ongoing negotiations with regional actors, and the possibility of “voluntary migration” for Gaza residents. He also alluded to settlement planning in the Gaza area and hinted at future alliances, though he declined to name prospective partners.
