Israel's October parliamentary election draws unity appeal and voter‑data dispute

President Isaac Herzog called for national unity ahead of the October 27 parliamentary election, stating the vote is “not a civil war” and urging citizens to continue the historic mission of building the Jewish state. He made the remarks during a ceremony re‑interring the remains of Theodor Herzl’s grandparents, recently exhumed from Belgrade and brought to Jerusalem. Herzog also highlighted a record level of emigration, citing a Tel Aviv University study that 268,500 Israelis lived abroad for at least three months between 2023‑2025, up from 183,200 a decade earlier, including many doctors and engineers.

At the same time, the ruling Likud party led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanjahu faces criticism over alleged misuse of voter data. The Central Election Committee, chaired by Judge Noam Sohlberg, ruled that party representatives may no longer be present in polling stations to monitor how individuals vote, deeming such practices a breach of ballot secrecy. Likud’s communications minister Shlomo Karhi condemned the decision and said the party will seek alternative means to obtain voter information, even releasing a fabricated AI‑generated courtroom video.
