The clarification follows a letter sent on September 4, 2026, by nine ISRO employee associations to Chairman V Narayanan. The unions expressed concerns regarding the potential transfer of manufacturing and operational functions to private entities, fearing ISRO could be reduced to a mere research and development boutique. They specifically cited remarks by IN-SPACe Chairman Pawan Kumar Goenka, who suggested that ISRO would eventually stop manufacturing launch vehicles.
ISRO Chairman V Narayanan addressed these concerns, stating that the agency remains a government organization and that its engagement with the private sector is intended to expand India’s space ecosystem. He noted that while the industry scales mature technologies, ISRO will focus on next-generation technologies and deep-space missions. The agency emphasized that the ongoing reforms aim to increase launch capacity and support the growing space economy rather than diminish the agency’s central importance.
