ISRO launches NVS-03 satellite to strengthen NavIC navigation

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) successfully launched the NVS-03 navigation satellite using the GSLV-F18 rocket from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota on October 30, 2026. The mission, which marked the 20th flight of the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV) program, placed the 2,232-kg satellite into a Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (GTO).

NVS-03 is the third satellite in India’s next-generation navigation series designed to bolster the Navigation with Indian Constellation (NavIC) system. The satellite features an indigenously developed Rubidium atomic clock and introduces the L1 navigation signal to complement existing L5 and S-band signals. This upgrade aims to improve compatibility with civilian devices like smartphones and smartwatches.

The deployment helps restore the NavIC constellation to its minimum operational requirement of four satellites, addressing recent gaps caused by previous technical issues. By enhancing indigenous positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT) services, the mission reduces strategic reliance on foreign systems such as the American GPS or Russian GLONASS. This capability is particularly critical for military applications, including missile guidance and the operation of fighter aircraft and drones.
