ISRO launches EOS-05 satellite via GSLV-F17 rocket

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) successfully launched the EOS-05 Earth observation satellite using the GSLV-F17 rocket from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota on September 4, 2026. The mission, which took place at 2:55 AM, marks the 19th flight of the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV).

EOS-05 is India’s first imaging satellite designed to operate from a geosynchronous orbit at an altitude of approximately 36,000 km. Weighing roughly 2,367 kg, it is the heaviest payload ever carried by a GSLV. The satellite is intended to provide high-frequency, near-real-time imagery of the Indian subcontinent, with the capability to monitor specific areas as frequently as every five minutes and the entire landmass every 30 minutes.

Equipped with a 700-millimeter telescope, the satellite will collect data across visible, near-infrared, and short-wave infrared bands. This capability is expected to significantly aid in disaster management—such as monitoring floods, cyclones, and forest fires—as well as agriculture, environmental monitoring, and national security. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and ISRO officials hailed the launch as a major milestone for India’s growing space capabilities and its expanding partnership with domestic industry.
