ISRO launches EOS-05 satellite mission

Overview

On September 4, 2026, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) successfully launched the EOS-05 Earth observation satellite using the GSLV-F17 rocket from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre. The launch occurred at 2:55 AM, and the satellite was placed into its intended Sub-Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (Sub-GTO) approximately 18 minutes later.

This mission marks the 19th flight of the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV) Mk II and represents the heaviest payload ever carried by the vehicle into a GTO or sub-GTO orbit. As India’s first imaging satellite to operate from a geosynchronous orbit, EOS-05 will maintain a fixed position approximately 36,000 kilometers above the Indian subcontinent. ISRO Chairman V Narayanan and Mission Director Thomas Kurian confirmed the satellite was precisely placed into its orbit and that its status is normal with solar panels successfully deployed.

The 2,367 kg spacecraft is equipped with a 700mm telescope capable of collecting data across visible, near-infrared, and short-wave infrared bands. It is expected to provide high-resolution imagery every 30 minutes, with intervals potentially reduced to five minutes for critical areas. EOS-05 serves as a replacement for the GISAT-1A satellite lost during a launch failure in 2021. Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the achievement as a reflection of India’s growing space sector capabilities and the strengthening partnership between ISRO and domestic industry. The satellite is intended to provide continuous, real-time monitoring for disaster management—including floods, cyclones, and forest fires—while also supporting agricultural assessments, national security, and environmental monitoring.
