ISRO launches NVS-03 satellite to bolster NavIC navigation system

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) successfully launched the NVS-03 navigation satellite on October 30, 2026, using the GSLV-F18 launch vehicle. The mission, which took place at 11:51 PM IST from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, marks the 20th flight of the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV).

NVS-03 is the third satellite in a second-generation series designed to strengthen the Navigation with Indian Constellation (NavIC) system. This mission aims to ensure service continuity and enhance India’s time sovereignty by deploying an indigenous atomic clock alongside procured units. The satellite also introduces the L1 frequency band in addition to the existing L5 and S-bands, which is intended to improve compatibility with civilian devices such as smartphones.

The NavIC system provides positioning, navigation, and timing services across India and a region extending 1,500 kilometers beyond its borders. The deployment of NVS-03 is a strategic step toward reducing reliance on foreign navigation systems like GPS and addressing previous technical setbacks within the constellation.
