ISSSTE faces medical shortages and infrastructure delays in Mexico

Labor unions are demanding urgent interventions to address critical healthcare shortages and infrastructure delays within the ISSSTE system in Mexico.

In Tapachula, Chiapas, the Federation of Unions of Workers in the Service of the State (FSTSE) reported that the Roberto Nettel Flores Clinic is facing a severe lack of medications, surgical materials, and supplies. Additionally, the clinic's operating room remains non-functional. The union noted that the completion of the clinic's expansion has been delayed, with new timelines suggesting a postponement until 2027, affecting over 8,000 beneficiaries who must often pay for private medical services.

In Chihuahua, the Section 8 of the National Union of Education Workers (SNTE) has submitted a formal request to President Claudia Sheinbaum to resolve bureaucratic and legal hurdles preventing the construction of a new ISSSTE Specialty Hospital. While land has been offered, legal disputes regarding the deed for the 20-hectare site have stalled the project. The union is calling for a high-level resolution table to ensure the infrastructure meets the growing needs of the region's beneficiaries.
