ISSSTE implements ROSA robots for knee replacement surgeries

The Mexican Social Security Institute for State Workers (ISSSTE) has acquired four ROSA (Robotic Orthopedic Surgical Assistant) robots to enhance the precision of knee replacement surgeries. Director General Martí Batres Guadarrama stated that the technology aims to modernize medical capacity and address the high volume of orthopedic needs, noting that the institute recorded approximately 85,000 knee interventions during 2025 and early 2026 due to an aging patient population.

Two of the robotic units have already been deployed at the Lic. Adolfo López Mateos and 1° de Octubre regional hospitals in Mexico City. The first successful procedures were performed on two women, aged 74 and 75, who were treated for gonarthrosis. Both surgeries lasted approximately two hours, and the patients were able to walk the following day.

The ROSA system utilizes infrared lights and sensors to create a three-dimensional map of the surgical area. This allows surgeons to plan incisions and calculate implant sizes with high accuracy. Medical specialists noted that the technology helps protect nerves and ligaments, reduces bleeding, and accelerates patient recovery times.
