ISSSTE medical technology advancements in Mexico

The Mexican Social Security Institute for State Workers (ISSSTE) has demonstrated the use of advanced surgical technologies to address complex medical needs.

In late August 2026, specialists at the Centro Médico Nacional ‘20 de Noviembre’ in Mexico City successfully completed a two-stage spinal surgery on a patient suffering from broken surgical screws. The team utilized a transoperative tomograph and a 3D surgical navigation system to install a vertebral spacer and new hardware.

By September 2026, the institute expanded its technological capabilities by acquiring four ROSA (Robotic Orthopedic Surgical Assistant) robots to improve the precision of knee replacement surgeries. Director General Martí Batres Guadarrama noted that this modernization aims to manage a high volume of orthopedic cases, following approximately 85,000 knee interventions recorded between 2025 and early 2026. The robotic units, which use infrared lights and sensors to create 3D maps, have already been deployed in Mexico City hospitals for successful procedures on elderly patients.
