ISSSTE specialists perform complex spinal surgery to restore patient mobility

Neurosurgeons at the Centro Médico Nacional ‘20 de Noviembre’ of the ISSSTE in Mexico City successfully performed a complex spinal surgery on a 44-year-old patient from Baja California Sur. The patient had previously undergone spinal surgery two years prior, but two of the installed screws had broken, causing intense pain in her back and legs.

The medical team, including specialists in neurosurgery, anesthesiology, and oncology, executed the treatment in two stages. The first stage involved placing a vertebral spacer between the vertebrae. Three days later, a second four-hour procedure was conducted to remove the old screws and install new, thicker screws to prevent future fractures.

To ensure precision, the surgical team utilized a transoperative tomograph and a 3D surgical navigation system. Following the procedure, the patient reported a disappearance of the primary leg pain and is expected to continue her recovery at home with a positive prognosis.
