Istanbul hosts Next Gen COP 30.5 youth climate diplomacy summit

The ‘Next Gen COP 30.5: Climate Summit and Youth Diplomacy Simulation’ program has launched in Istanbul. The event features 200 representatives from twelve different countries.

Organized by the Turkish Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change in collaboration with the Jamra Foundation and Istanbul Technical University, the program aims to simulate the role of youth in climate change diplomacy. During the opening, Furkan Gök Göz, Chairman of the Jamra Foundation, noted that Turkey is entering a historic phase in climate diplomacy, guided by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s vision to reach net-zero emissions by 2053.

Speakers also highlighted the global impact of the ‘Zero Waste’ movement, which originated in Turkey. Additionally, discussions emphasized the critical importance of global temperature control, noting that even a 1.5-degree Celsius difference has profound consequences for the planet. The event serves as a precursor to Turkey hosting the COP31 United Nations Climate Change Conference from November 9 to 20.
