Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality announces 296 billion lira water investment

The Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IBB) held a presentation meeting at the Yenikapı Dr. Mimar Kadir Topbaş Show and Art Center regarding ISKI’s 2019–2026 investment and project plans. During the meeting, IBB Deputy Mayor Nuri Aslan announced that 296 billion lira has been invested over the last seven years at current values.

Of this total, 130 billion lira was allocated to drinking water and 166 billion lira to wastewater investments. Aslan highlighted several key achievements, including reducing water loss and leakage rates from 22% to 18.48%, which prevented the loss of approximately 195 million cubic meters of water. Additionally, solutions were implemented for chronic flooding at 181 different locations, and 100 kilometers of stream improvement work was completed.

Regarding water security, the Melen investments remain a priority. The Melen 3. Pumping Station has been commissioned, adding 133 million cubic meters of water to the city. The recently opened Kağıthane–Bahçelievler–Sefaköy Drinking Water Tunnel will facilitate the delivery of Melen water to the inner and western parts of the European side. Furthermore, the second phase of the Cumhuriyet Drinking Water Treatment Plant investment is expected to create a new daily capacity of 360,000 cubic meters.
