Istanbul shooting: Man kills former partner and enters standoff

In Istanbul’s Gaziosmanpaşa district, 41-year-old Şerife Gezer was fatally shot by her former partner, 51-year-old Hakan Sayacı. Gezer had reportedly been in a relationship with Sayacı for approximately 10 years before they separated two years ago. Shortly before the attack, Gezer contacted her father, stating, “Hakan blocked my path, he will harm me.”

Sayacı intercepted Gezer on the street and opened fire, striking her in the chest and neck. Following the shooting, the suspect fled into a local pastry shop (yufkacı), where he initially took an employee hostage before attempting to take his own life. After a 90-minute standoff involving special operations police and negotiations with a relative, Sayacı surrendered and was taken into custody.

In separate incidents, police in Bayrampaşa were injured while intervening in a domestic violence situation, resulting in the arrest of four suspects. Additionally, a man in Kayseri was arrested after attacking his estranged wife with a knife following a pursuit from Konya.
