Police standoffs and violence in Istanbul

Overview

In mid-August, a four-day standoff occurred in Istanbul’s Çatalca district after a man, identified as İrfan A., locked himself in his home following a family dispute. The situation escalated when the suspect allegedly opened fire on gendarmerie officers. After continuous negotiations, the suspect surrendered on August 16 and was taken into custody.

Later in August, a separate violent incident took place in the Gaziosmanpaşa district of Istanbul. Hakan Sayacı fatally shot his former partner, Şerife Gezer, before fleeing into a pastry shop. After taking an employee hostage and attempting to take his own life, Sayacı surrendered to special operations police following a 90-minute standoff.
