Istria celebrates autumn truffle season and gastronomy

The Istria region of Croatia enters its autumn truffle season, highlighting the white truffle (Tuber magnatum Pico) as a central culinary attraction. The season, which peaks in October, draws visitors to the Mirna River valley and the truffle triangle encompassing Pazin, Buje, and Buzet.

Various gastronomic events are scheduled throughout the autumn, including the White Truffle Days running from September 5 to November 8. Key locations include Motovun, Buzet, and Livade. In Buzet, celebrations such as Subotina and Subotina all’antica feature traditional music, crafts, and large-scale truffle omelets, offering a historical atmosphere with traditional costumes and ancient trades.

Beyond gastronomy, the region offers autumn tourism focused on medieval villages, vineyards, and nature, such as Monte Učka. Coastal areas like Opatija and Krk island also provide seasonal activities, including the Marunada chestnut festival in Lovran every October.
