Istria olive harvest begins amid drought and rising costs

The olive harvest season is underway in the Istria region of Slovenia and Croatia. Despite summer heat and drought, the 'Istrian bjelica' variety has shown promising oil content, with yields in some areas exceeding last year and long-term averages.

In Slovenia, the Olive Growers Association of Slovenian Istria expects an average total yield, anticipating more than 35 tons of extra virgin olive oil with protected designation of origin (EDOOSI ZOP). The health of the fruit is a notable advantage this season, as low humidity and dry weather have limited the presence of olive flies and fungal diseases.

In Croatia, producers report that summer heatwaves have increased production costs, which is expected to lead to higher olive oil prices. Some producers are targeting prices between 36 and 40 euros per liter to account for organic production costs. Yields for the season are reported between 10% and 14%, meaning 100 kilograms of fruit produces 10 to 14 liters of oil. Rapid processing after harvest remains critical for maintaining high quality and low acidity.
