Curitiba daycare hostage crisis: 13 children rescued as suspect is killed

An armed man invaded the CMEI São Braz municipal daycare center in the São Braz neighborhood of Curitiba, Brazil, on Friday, October 9, 2026. The suspect, who was armed with a knife, a firearm simulacrum, and flammable material, held 13 children and several adults hostage in a classroom.

Following approximately three hours of negotiations led by the Special Police Operations Battalion (BOPE), authorities conducted a tactical intervention. The decision to enter the room was made after the suspect began behaving aggressively and physically assaulting the children. During the operation, the suspect was neutralized and died at the scene.

All 13 children, aged between 2 and 5, were rescued without serious injuries, though some required medical evaluation and psychological support. The Municipal Education Secretariat and the City of Curitiba have mobilized teams to provide assistance to the children, staff, and families affected by the incident.
