Curitiba daycare hostage crisis

Overview

On Friday, October 9, 2026, an armed man held 13 children and several adults hostage at the CMEI São Braz municipal daycare center in the São Braz neighborhood of Curitiba, Brazil. The assailant, identified as 41-year-old José Tobias Elias da Silva, entered the facility by jumping a fence. He was armed with a knife, flammable material, and a suspected fake firearm. He reportedly threatened to set the building on fire, at one point pouring a liquid smelling of gasoline in the classroom and threatening to pour it on himself and others.

Following approximately three hours of negotiations led by the Special Police Operations Battalion (BOPE), authorities launched a tactical intervention. This decision was made after the suspect began physically assaulting the children, who were aged between two and five. During the operation, police neutralized the suspect with gunfire after he attempted to reach one of the children; he died at the scene. Reports indicate the attacker was suffering from schizophrenia and had a history of violence, including a 2021 incident in São Paulo where he attempted to push a woman onto subway tracks.

All 13 children were rescued. While most did not sustain serious injuries, at least one child sustained a facial injury, and five children were taken for medical evaluation. Local authorities, including the Curitiba City Hall and the Municipal Education Secretariat, have mobilized teams to provide psychological support for the affected students, staff, and families.
