Itabuna and Palmas grant municipal holiday for Brazil‑Japan World Cup match

Mayors in two Brazilian cities have issued decrees allowing a point‑facultative (optional work day) for municipal employees on Monday, 29 June 2026, the date of the Brazil‑Japan FIFA World Cup group‑stage match. In Itabuna, mayor Augusto Castro announced that municipal offices will close, except for essential services such as the local emergency unit (UPA), SAMU‑192, the public hospital, child‑care shelters, municipal police, and civil defence. In Palmas, mayor Eduardo Siqueira Campos similarly declared a point‑facultative, noting that essential services—including health units, emergency response teams, social‑service shelters and educational facilities operating on their own schedule—will continue to operate on a plant‑on basis.

Both decrees stress the cultural importance of the football match and aim to reduce congestion and allow citizens to watch the game, while ensuring that critical public functions remain uninterrupted.
