Italian activist Domenico Centrone detained in Libya, sister urges his release

Italian university lecturer and documentary filmmaker Domenico Centrone, 33, was detained by Libyan authorities in eastern Libya on 24 May together with nine other members of the Global Sumud land convoy that was trying to reach Gaza. His sister, Maria Rosaria Centrone, released a 12‑minute video appeal on 15 June, thanking the Italian embassy in Benghazi and Consul Filippo Colombo for their “transparent flow of information” and asking Italian and European institutions to secure the freedom of her brother and the other detainees.

In the appeal she described her brother as “good, ethical and innocent”, rejected online accusations that he was a drifter, and called on the public and civil society to “wake up” to the humanitarian mission. She urged that all those held with him be released, emphasizing the human cost of the ongoing conflict in Gaza and the need for continued diplomatic effort.
