Italian agriculture faces climate shifts and falling crop prices

Agricultural sectors in Italy are facing dual challenges related to climate change and economic instability. In the Amalfi Coast, historian and lemon grower Salvatore Aceto has raised questions regarding traditional winter protection methods for lemon groves. While plastic netting has replaced traditional brushwood to reduce costs and labor, changing climate patterns—specifically rising autumn and winter temperatures—necessitate a re-evaluation of whether these coverings remain effective or necessary, except for protection against hail and solar radiation.

Simultaneously, in the Sannio and Valle Caudina regions, regional councilor Pellegrino Mastella has expressed support for farmers struggling with falling product prices. Mastella noted that producers of grapes, tomatoes, fruits, and vegetables are facing rising costs for fuel, fertilizer, and labor, while being forced to sell harvests at prices that may not cover their expenses. He warned of potential speculation within the supply chain and called for serious monitoring of prices to ensure fair remuneration for producers.
