Italian agri‑food sectors post modest growth despite export hurdles and consumption dip
The Italian fruit and vegetable export sector recorded a value of €6.6 billion in 2025, up about 11 % on the previous year, with volume growth of 8 % despite higher shipping costs, Middle‑East tensions, and rising input prices. Domestic demand rose 5 % in 2025 and the first four months of 2026 showed a further 1 % increase.
The national beer industry produced 16.8 million hl in 2025, a 2.5 % decline, and total consumption fell to 21.2 million hl, down 2.5 % year‑on‑year. Nevertheless, low‑ and non‑alcohol beers doubled their market share to 3.9 % of total sales, an 85 % rise. The sector employs over 112 000 people and generates more than €10 billion in economic activity, but faces pressure from a 5.2 % drop in the Horeca channel, a 6 % fall in exports, and competition from imports. Industry leaders call for fairer fiscal treatment, investment in sustainability and digital innovation, and support for the Horeca channel to sustain growth.
