Italian 'Aromi in Blu' project turns invasive Adriatic fish into commercial resource

The "Aromi in Blu" initiative, promoted by GAL Pesca Abruzzo in partnership with the University of Camerino, seeks to convert alien fish species that have colonised the Adriatic Sea into marketable products. Funded by the Italian Ministry of Agriculture under the 2025‑2027 national fisheries programme, the project addresses climate‑driven changes in marine ecosystems and the rise of bio‑invasive species.

Led scientifically by Professor Alberto Felici, the programme combines advanced research on the nutritional value of both native and non‑native fish, development of gastronomic applications for the HoReCa sector, and a comprehensive training scheme for fishers, aquaculture operators, processors, restaurateurs, hospitality schools and consumer associations. By promoting the use of these species, the project aims to create new economic opportunities for the regional fishing industry while mitigating ecological impacts.
