Italian marine species management projects

In late July 2026 Italy launched the "Aromi in Blu" initiative, a partnership between GAL Pesca Abruzzo and the University of Camerino, to turn alien fish species that have colonised the Adriatic Sea into marketable products. Funded by the national fisheries programme, the project combines nutritional research, gastronomic development and training for fishers and the hospitality sector, aiming to create economic opportunities while mitigating ecological impacts.

A few days later, the second year of the "MollusCa Blu" project in Campania reported a three‑fold increase in cannolicchio (Ensis minor) densities after experimental seabed ploughing began in 2025. Led by the University of Naples Federico II and the CO.GE.MO. consortium, the effort demonstrates how targeted, scientifically‑controlled interventions can restore benthic habitats and support sustainable fisheries, informing regional resource‑management plans.

Together, these initiatives illustrate Italy’s broader strategy of applying research‑driven, government‑funded measures to address climate‑driven marine ecosystem changes, whether by commercialising invasive species or restoring depleted native stocks.
