Italian authorities clamp down on local drug trade as synthetic opioids spread in Europe

In Matera, Italy, the Guardia di Finanza, working with the local prosecutor, arrested four individuals at home and imposed residence restrictions on three others as part of a wider investigation that has identified 15 suspects involved in the supply, packaging and distribution of cocaine, hashish, heroin, fentanyl and other narcotics. The operation revealed a stable local drug market that also exploits mobile messaging to reach minors.

A recent European Drug Report highlights a rapid increase in new synthetic opioids across the EU, noting seven new substances reported in 2025, including three nitazenes and three orphine derivatives. Experts warn that these highly potent drugs, often disguised as legitimate medications, are driving a rise in poisonings and deaths, with Bulgaria alone recording over 100 fentanyl‑related fatalities in 2024‑2025. The report also cites a large theft of 80 fentanyl vials from a Rome hospital and a surge in counterfeit opioid tablets, underscoring growing challenges for addiction services and public health officials.
