Italian automotive market: New vs. used cars and tax obligations

The Italian automotive market presents a choice between new and used vehicles, influenced by cost, technology, and environmental regulations. New cars average approximately 30,000 euros, offering advanced technology, higher safety standards, and better efficiency. They also help avoid regional restrictions, such as the ban on Euro 5 diesel engines.

In contrast, used vehicles offer significant savings. For around 15,000 euros, consumers can acquire reliable models with acceptable mileage. Older generations of popular models like the Toyota Yaris, Volkswagen T-Roc, Renault Clio, and Suzuki Swift remain viable options due to their mechanical quality and fuel efficiency.

Additionally, owners of high-displacement vehicles in Italy must manage the ‘Superbollo’, an additional state tax on automobile taxes. This tax requires specific calculation and payment methods, including F24 forms, online banking, or through the Agenzia delle Entrate website.
