Italian used car market trends and competition

Overview

The Italian automotive market continues to see a shift toward used vehicles. Data from the 2025 Second Hand Economy Observatory by IPSOS Doxa for Subito indicates that one in five Italians has purchased a used vehicle in the last three years, representing a 6 percentage point increase from 2024. In 2025, used car sales in Italy were more than double those of new cars. By August 2026, the market has undergone significant structural shifts. SUVs have become a dominant force, now accounting for approximately one in three new car sales, with popular models including the Toyota RAV4, Dacia Duster, and MG ZS. In the diesel segment, the Mercedes GLA emerged as the top seller, followed by the Audi Q3 and the Volkswagen Tiguan. Urban mobility trends remain centered on microcars and electric quadricycles, such as the Citroën Ami and Fiat Topolino, which cater to younger drivers and short-distance commuters. However, a growing challenge has emerged regarding vehicle affordability: there is an increasing scarcity of new vehicles priced below 15,000 euros. While the Dacia Sandero and Fiat Panda remain in this budget-friendly bracket, the availability of affordable entry-level options is tightening. Recent data from the Automobile Club d’Italia (ACI) shows a slight contraction in the used car market for August 2026, with ownership transfers falling by 0.2% compared to August 2025 to a total of 179,397. Despite this, the preference for used vehicles remains high; in August, 258 used cars were sold for every 100 new cars. While overall vehicle transfers decreased by 0.4%, the used motorcycle market grew by 2.2%. Additionally, gasoline-hybrid transfers reached 11% of the August market, marking a 19.4% annual increase. In the light commercial vehicle sector, registrations rose by 4.6% in August to 8,390 units, recovering from a 10% decline in July.
