Italian Basin Authority updates hydrogeological risk plans for Ischia and Trapani

The Southern Apennines District Basin Authority has released an updated Hydrogeological Asset Plan for the island of Ischia, positioning the plan as a pilot model for complex landslide‑prone areas. The new scheme aims to integrate safety, planning and sustainable development, and officials suggest it could be applied to similar territories.

In Sicily, the same Authority has revised the Hydrogeological Asset Plan for the city of Trapani, officially recognizing a concrete hydraulic risk for the first time. Regional deputy Cristina Ciminnisi highlighted that previous assessments underestimated flood vulnerability, and called for immediate preventive actions, including the protection of natural water pathways and the reinforcement of infrastructure such as the Verderame torrent bridge. Both updates seek to improve monitoring, civil protection measures and urban planning to reduce future landslide and flood damage.

These initiatives reflect a broader shift toward more rigorous risk assessment and mitigation in Italy’s coastal and island communities.
