Italian beach operators face uncertainty over concession renewals

Beach concession renewals are causing significant concern for local operators along the Italian Riviera. In Fano, political tension has emerged regarding past administrative decisions. Critics argue that the previous local government failed to follow the procedural model used by neighboring municipalities like Pesaro, which secured extensions until 2033. Consequently, approximately 55 beach concessions in Fano must now face new public tenders by September 2027, leaving local businesses with six years less planning security than their neighbors.

In the Forlì-Cesena province, the upcoming publication of maritime concession tenders has raised fears among small-scale entrepreneurs. With 170 beach establishments at stake, there is growing concern that large multinational corporations, investment funds, and industrial groups may outbid local family-run businesses. Ilaria Meneghello, Vice President of the Cesenatico Beach Establishments Cooperative, expressed concern that the entry of large financial groups could undermine the traditional hospitality model and the human connection that defines the region's tourism identity.
