Italian beaches face issues with space reservation and waste

Issues regarding the management and decorum of public beaches in Italy have drawn attention in Sardinia and Sicily. In La Caletta di Siniscola, Sardinia, a 51-year-old worker, Claudio Stangoni, gained viral attention after removing and discarding umbrellas left on the sand. The action was a response to the practice of using umbrellas as 'placeholders' to reserve beach space overnight, which is prohibited under local and maritime ordinances. Such unauthorized occupation of public land can result in fines ranging from 500 to 3,000 euros.

In Messina, Sicily, Giuseppe Previti, coordinator for Cittadinanzattiva, has called for urgent intervention due to significant waste accumulation on a beach near the former racetrack. The report highlights a high volume of abandoned plastic bottles, which Previti attributes to the behavior of uncivilized users. The accumulation of refuse is noted as a particular concern during the peak summer season, as it impacts both local residents and the area's image for tourists.
