European stock markets rise on Hormuz agreement and oil price shifts

European equity markets posted mixed but generally positive performance on 6 August 2026 as investors reacted to an emerging agreement between Iran and Oman to manage ship traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. The optimism helped the French CAC 40 close at a record 8 699.71 points, the Italian FTSE MIB rise modestly, and the pan‑European STOXX 600 approach new highs.

Oil prices showed volatility: Brent hovered around $79‑83 per barrel and WTI around $75‑77, while a New York session saw WTI climb 2.9% to $77.39. The easing of geopolitical tension lowered the risk premium on energy, supporting the equity rally.

In Italy, the BTP‑Bund spread widened to 78 basis points with BTP yields above 3.9%, reflecting lingering concerns over the Hormuz talks and domestic budget measures. Banco BPM shares jumped about 4.4% after better‑than‑expected quarterly results, while Juventus stock edged up 0.38% and other sector leaders such as Brunello Cucinelli and Leonardo posted gains. Bitcoin also broke a downtrend channel, reaching roughly $65,030.
