Italy bond market activity July–October 2026
Overview
The Treasury’s retail-focused bond programme continued to dominate Italy’s debt market. Following the BTP Italia Sì launch in mid-June, orders reached €8.84 bn. By late August, the BTP-Bund spread showed volatility, sitting at 82 basis points on August 19. On August 24, the Ministry of Economy and Finance announced a new BTP Short Term bond auction for August 26, with a maturity of October 30, 2028, and a 3.00% gross annual coupon. While the spread fluctuated, it decreased to 80 basis points by August 26, as the 10-year BTP yield dropped below 4% to approximately 3.99%. On August 27, the BTP-Bund spread rose again to between 82 and 83 basis points, while 10-year BTP yields reached approximately 4.05% to 4.07%. Analysts attributed this pressure to international instability and domestic political uncertainty. To manage debt refinancing, the Treasury scheduled five auctions for September, including BOT, BTP, and inflation-indexed BTP€i issuances. In September, the Treasury issued €8 billion in BTP Green bonds, which saw extraordinary demand exceeding €110 billion, driven largely by ESG investors. However, market volatility intensified due to French fiscal concerns, pushing the BTP-Bund spread above 100 basis points. In mid-October, the Treasury placed €7 billion in BTPs at yields reaching multi-year highs, with the three-year, seven-year, and fifteen-year maturities yielding 3.69%, 4.24%, and 4.84% respectively. During this period, the BTP-Bund spread reached 108.6 basis points, though the spread against French OATs decreased to -28.8 basis points. To support retail investors, the Ministry launched a dual issuance of BTP Valore bonds from October 19–23, 2026. The offering included a traditional bond with step-up interest rates and a ‘BTP Valore Insieme’ option providing a single cumulative gross interest payment at maturity.
