Italian Carabinieri legend Antonio “Comandante Alfa” remembered for courage teachings
Antonio, known as “Comandante Alfa”, was born in 1951 in Castelvetrano and was a co‑founder of the Carabinieri’s Gruppo Intervento Speciale (GIS). Over nearly five decades he took part in major anti‑terrorism and organized‑crime operations, including missions in Afghanistan, Iraq, Bosnia and Kosovo, the Trani super‑prison uprising and the protection of magistrate Nino Di Matteo. He became one of Italy’s most decorated Carabinieri.
In the days before 26 July 2026 he died, leaving a void within the force and among the thousands who attended his conferences or read his books. On 18 April 2026 he inaugurated an academy that teaches his method, stressing discipline, responsibility, preparation and mental control. He is remembered for the maxim “Courage is not the absence of fear”, explaining that true courage means learning to govern fear.
His legacy is now carried on through the academy and the many people he inspired.
