Italian CGIL pushes healthcare reforms in Piombino and Longobucco

The CGIL Livorno branch met with the ASL, Tuscany regional authorities and the Società della Salute Valli Etrusche in Piombino to discuss persistent problems in local health services. Representatives highlighted shortages of doctors and nurses—especially in cardiology—a lag in building community health houses, and the need for clearer timelines on the new emergency department. Positive steps noted included the opening of a psychiatric diagnostic service and the creation of a permanent monitoring unit for the Villamarina hospital and territorial medicine.

In Longobucco, Calabria, the CGIL organized a public debate titled “Sanità, Territorio, Futuro” to address the broader challenge of healthcare in Italy’s interior areas. Union leaders reiterated demands for a 24‑hour medical guard, a resident primary‑care doctor and reliable ambulance service. While telemedicine was praised as helpful, participants stressed it does not replace on‑site specialist care. Recent progress was marked by the construction of a Casa di Comunità and a “Bottega della Salute,” though staffing remains a critical issue as many physicians work in private practice.
