Italy health reform, Sicily crisis & Pfizer plant closure
Entities: Sicily · Giuseppe Campobasso · Catania plant · Italian chemical workers' unions · Pfizer Inc.
Overview
By late July the situation intensified. On 29 July Pfizer confirmed it will permanently abandon its Catania manufacturing site, planning to sell the facility and not reconvert production. The closure will affect 370 workers, raising the earlier estimate of roughly 330 jobs. The decision was announced at a Regional Assembly commission meeting attended remotely by CEO Giuseppe Campobasso. Italian unions (Ugl Chimici, Filctem CGIL, Femca CISL, Uiltec UIL) jointly protested, condemning the move as abandonment of social responsibility and warning of further cuts for remaining staff. The development follows earlier protests on 16 July and talks scheduled for 22 July between the health and labour ministries and union representatives. Local officials and the Archbishop of Catania have previously appealed for government intervention. Health‑reform efforts continue, with Tuscany and Sicily still pursuing Community House initiatives and broader hospital‑network reforms despite the industrial setback.
