Italian cities accelerate digital parking services

In Viareggio, the municipal parking app Mover has seen rapid adoption. The share of short‑stay payments made via the app rose from 9 % in 2022 to 33.6 % in the first half of 2026, while the use of traditional parking meters fell from 86.6 % to 62 %. Transactions reached 1,423,595 in that period, and revenue from the app grew from €63 k in 2023 to over €105 k in 2026, with total parking‑related income climbing from €233 k to nearly €739 k.

Meanwhile, Rome has entered the operational phase of the SOSPAS (Smart On‑Street Parking System) project, installing roughly 2,000 sensors in city garages. The system aims to expand to more than 7,500 smart stalls by mid‑2027, providing real‑time data on space availability and integrating with payment apps, car‑sharing services, and electric‑vehicle chargers. The sensors are already active in districts such as Ripa, Testaccio and Trastevere, helping to reduce drivers’ search time for parking and improve overall traffic flow.
