Italian cities expand electronic ID card appointments

Municipalities in Italy are increasing the availability of appointments for the electronic identity card (CIE). In Reggio Emilia, about 1,000 new slots have been added to the booking agenda, with additional operators and a summer schedule that dedicates Wednesdays to CIE renewals across multiple offices. The city reports issuing over 19,600 CIEs in the first six months of the year, surpassing previous yearly totals.

In Rome, an Open Day on 27–28 June will offer extraordinary service points at several locations, including former tourist information offices and municipal offices in districts VII and XII. Citizens must book online through the Ministry of the Interior’s agenda, bring a recent photo, payment card, and their existing identity document. The ministerial decree also extends the validity of paper identity cards until their natural expiration, but they will no longer be usable for travel abroad after 3 August 2026.
