Italian coastal towns host World Drowning Prevention Day events
On July 25, Cesenatico held a World Drowning Prevention Day celebration on Villamarina beach. The program featured rescue dogs from the Italian Rescue Dogs Society (SICS), volunteers from the Italian Red Cross and lifeguards demonstrating water‑rescue techniques. The event was organized by the Cooperativa Stabilimenti Balneari di Cesenatico and aligns with the WHO‑backed global campaign established after an April 2021 UN resolution and the Blue Flag programme of the Foundation for Environmental Education.
In the Baia di Porto Selvaggio near Nardò, about a thousand visitors attended a parallel event on the same day. Local groups such as ASD Nettuno Rescue, the Nardò Carabinieri unit and ASD Onda Viva performed kayak and SUP rescue demonstrations. A sudden medical emergency in the water resulted in a fatality despite rapid rescue efforts.
The following day, July 26, the Campo di Mare beach at San Pietro Vernotico hosted the second edition of the "Spiagge della Salute" tour. Free dermatological and nutritional consultations were offered, and sport activities ranging from kite‑surfing to yoga were organised. Demonstrations of water‑rescue were provided by Lifeguard Italia and the Italian Rescue Dogs Society, continuing the national push for safer bathing practices.
