Italian coastal regions expand beach accessibility for people with disabilities

Various Italian regions are implementing infrastructure projects to improve beach accessibility for people with disabilities. These initiatives focus on installing PVC walkways, ramps, and specialized equipment such as JOB floating chairs to allow individuals with mobility impairments to reach the water safely.

In Puglia, the “Mare Democratico” program has funded improvements at several locations, including the ex Lido Poste in Brindisi and the San Girolamo waterfront in Bari. In Sicily, a pilot project in Pachino at Granelli beach aims to serve as a model for the province of Syracuse. In Campania, the city of Naples has allocated 185,000 euros to provide specialized assistance and equipment at the Rotonda Diaz area.

These projects are often the result of regional funding and local advocacy. In Brindisi, local representatives noted that the improvements at the ex Lido Poste were driven by a public petition and regional grants, while in Naples, the service includes trained socio-sanitary operators to assist users in the water.
