Inclusive disability and maritime access projects in Italy
Overview
Throughout the summer of 2026, Italy expanded its focus on inclusive maritime activities and coastal accessibility. In late July and early August, several sailing events were held to promote social inclusion. The “Navig‑Abile” event in Cirò Marina provided maritime access for participants and families, while the ASD Vita Maris association organized a sailing day for approximately forty teenagers with disabilities in Casalabate, noting that the sea “levels differences and creates an immediate sense of community.” In Ladispoli, the “Mare Senza Barriere” event utilized a fleet of 21 boats to allow individuals with sensory disabilities to experience the water through guided tours and collective swimming.
Infrastructure developments continued to address physical barriers. In Puglia, the “Mare Democratico” program funded improvements at the ex Lido Poste in Brindisi and the San Girolamo waterfront in Bari. In early August, a modular, eco-compatible walkway was installed at San Girolamo beach to link access points to the shoreline, with similar installations planned for Pane e Pomodoro beach. In Naples, 185,000 euros were allocated for specialized assistance and equipment at the Rotonda Diaz area. Other projects include a pilot program at Granelli beach in Sicily, a new platform in Passoscuro, and €325,000 for sea access ramps in Cabras.
New maritime initiatives furthered these efforts in August. In Giulianova, the “Inclusione dA‑Mare – Il mare non ha barriere” event offered jet-ski motor-therapy for people with disabilities. In Sottomarina, the Centro Astoria hosted an inclusive kayaking event for youth with disabilities. Additionally, the Sea Spirit Association in Cupra Marittima continued its specialized kayak excursions for coastal exploration.
