Italian coastal water quality monitoring shows generally good conditions

In the Abruzzo region, ARPA Abruzzo clarified that its sea‑water monitoring and the data collected by the Legambiente Goletta Verde campaign use different sampling methods, so the results are not directly comparable. Despite the methodological differences, the agency emphasized that the overall assessment of the Adriatic coast—from Giulianova to Tortoreto—is positive, with no widespread water‑quality problems identified. The clarification underlines the importance of accurate communication to residents and tourists, whose beach attendance and local economies depend on reliable water‑quality information.

Separately, the municipality of Forio on the island of Ischia launched a seasonal monitoring programme for 2026, contracting a certified laboratory to perform 36 microbiological tests at six beaches and the Cava dell’Isola site. The tests target Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci, aiming to protect swimmers after recent repairs to an underwater sewer pipe. The programme will cost €4,880 and intends to maintain high safety standards throughout the peak tourist period.
