Italian water crisis deepens: drought and infrastructure
Overview
The Po River continues to experience a severe water crisis driven by persistent heatwaves and drought. Flows remain significantly below annual averages, causing ecological and economic distress. High water temperatures, reaching 28 degrees Celsius in some areas, have fueled massive proliferations of algae that deplete oxygen levels and hinder navigation.
Political tension has intensified regarding the crisis. Angelo Bonelli of Alleanza Verdi e Sinistra has criticized government inaction on climate change, contrasting environmental funding with military spending. In Lombardy, officials are emphasizing the need to reform agricultural irrigation strategies to adapt to permanent water scarcity.
Infrastructure and regional emergencies continue to expand. In the Como province, Como Acqua has declared an exceptional water emergency, particularly affecting the Alta Valle Intelvi. In Schio, authorities have issued ordinances restricting non-essential water use.
In Agrigento, the water crisis has evolved into a critical operational struggle for local businesses. Confcommercio and the Italian Federation of Public Establishments (FIPE) have reported that supply instability is ‘devastating’ the local economy. The failure of Aica to provide necessary weekly water rotations led to the closure of the ‘Granchio Blu’ restaurant in Licata on August 30. FIPE President Giovanni Morello noted that these shortages cause significant damage through lost revenue during peak season, wasted raw materials, and harm to the credibility of local tourism.
New complications have emerged in the Valle dei Templi Archaeological Park. Aica President Danila Nobile announced that water supplies will be suspended for approximately thirty residential units in the via Graceffo area following a negative opinion from the Superintendency of Cultural Heritage regarding a new water network installation in the protected zone.
